Do you know about some of the new Florida laws as of July 2023?

The 2023 Florida legislative session was among the most extremist on record. 

A number of the laws passed are already tied up in the courts with lawsuits challenging their constitutionality, including the 6-week abortion ban, the ban on gender-affirming care for minors, new restrictions on drag performances, and parts of the HB 7050 suppression bill. 

But many widely unpopular and repressive new laws went into effect on July 1.

Dr. Victor Vazquez Elected to Miami Springs Council

The Miami-Dade Democratic Executive Committee congratulates Dr. Victor Vazquez on his election to the Miami Springs Council in the 2023 elections held on April 4.

Miami elects Sabina Covo, the city's first Colombian born commissioner

History was made on Monday, February 27. Heading into women's history month, residents of Miami's district 2 elected Sabina Covo as their Commissioner, only the second time the city has elected a Latina woman to the commission (The city of Miami's population is 72% Hispanic). The Miami-Dade Democratic Party proudly salutes Sabina Covo’s victory in this special election.

Covo ran on a platform that prioritized combatting the effects of climate change, expanding access to high-quality public transit, making housing more affordable to residents, supporting arts and entertainment, and boosting the City’s economic development and tourism.

2023 Elections in Miami-Dade

In 2023, 15 municipalities in Miami-Dade will be holding elections, including the city of Miami, Coral Gables, Hialeah, and Miami Beach. Turnout for these local elections can often be very low, and every vote counts. We even witnessed a tie in a local election in 2022. 

Please check the Miami-Dade 2023 election calendar and share the dates with your friends who live in these areas.

Remember, that vote-by-mail registrations expired at the end of 2022, and we recommend all voters to re-enroll, so they do not miss out on any general elections or runoffs for their local government. Click here to re-enroll in vote by mail
