Statement regarding the protests in Cuba
The Miami-Dade Democratic Party stands firmly in support of, and in solidarity with, all Cuban people as they continue their decades-long struggle for freedom.
The brutal repression of the Cuban people by the current regime has reached an unprecedented tipping point as Cubans take to the streets of Havana by the thousands. Not since August 1994, when Cubans took to the Malecón in Havana to protest against repressive government policies, has a major uprising like this taken place. We find ourselves decades later watching history unfold--only this time we are witnessing perhaps the beginning of the regime’s end. We offer our full-throated support for this historical call for freedom and recognize the extreme care with which foreign political parties must tread when addressing this issue. The people of Cuba deserve their own voice, and we owe them our support.
The Miami-Dade Democratic party acknowledges that the US embargo against Cuba restricts travel, imports and commercial trade, all of which would significantly improve the lives of Cubans if, and when, lifted. However, the Cuban regime imposes limitations that go beyond the scope of the embargo and are central to the Cuban people’s protest. Some of these limitations are narrowing how Cubans can start their own businesses; making vital food and supplies purchasable only with foreign currency instead of the national currency with which most Cubans are paid; arresting and disappearing dissidents who are deemed too critical; prohibiting multi-party elections; and so many more damaging measures not imposed by the US. The Cuban people’s cries to lift all limitations on their agency must be heard--and we call on all sympathetic parties to center the stories of those directly affected.
Party Chair Steve Simeonidis offered the following statement: “We continue to stand with the Cuban people and support their calls for an end to their brutal dictatorship.We further condemn all violence against these peaceful protestors. Let the people speak!”

El Partido Demócrata de Miami-Dade apoya firmemente y se solidariza con todo el pueblo cubano mientras continúan su lucha de décadas por la libertad.
La brutal represión del pueblo cubano por parte del régimen castrista ha alcanzado un punto de inflexión sin precedente cuando miles de cubanos salieron a las calles. Desde agosto de 1994, cuando los cubanos salieron al Malecón de La Habana para protestar contra las políticas represivas del gobierno, no se había producido un levantamiento importante como este. Nos encontramos décadas después viendo cómo se desarrolla la historia, solo que esta vez estamos presenciando quizás el comienzo del fin del régimen. Ofrecemos nuestro pleno apoyo a este histórico llamado a la libertad y reconocemos el extremo cuidado con el que los partidos políticos extranjeros deben actuar al abordar este tema. El pueblo de Cuba merece tener voz propia y le debemos nuestro apoyo.
El Partido Demócrata de Miami-Dade reconoce que el embargo de Estados Unidos contra Cuba restringe los viajes, las importaciones y el comercio comercial, todo lo cual mejoraría significativamente la vida de los cubanos si se levantara y cuándo lo hiciera. Sin embargo, el régimen cubano impone limitaciones que van más allá del alcance del bloqueo y también forman parte de la protesta del pueblo cubano. Algunas de estas limitaciones están reduciendo la forma en que los cubanos pueden iniciar sus propios negocios; hacer que los alimentos y suministros vitales se puedan comprar solo con moneda extranjera en lugar de la moneda nacional con la que se paga a la mayoría de los cubanos; arrestar y desaparecer a disidentes que se consideren demasiado críticos; prohibir las elecciones multipartidistas; y muchas más medidas dañinas no impuestas por Estados Unidos. Se deben escuchar los gritos del pueblo cubano para que se eliminen todas las limitaciones a sus derechos, y hacemos un llamado a todos para que centren las historias de los directamente afectados.
El presidente del partido, Steve Simeonidis, ofreció la siguiente declaración: “Seguimos apoyando al pueblo cubano y respaldando sus llamados a poner fin a su brutal dictadura. Además, condenamos toda la violencia contra estos manifestantes pacíficos. ¡Que hable la gente! "
