Last night, the West Kendall Democrats club re-launched with a bang! Over 50 Democrats attended the club’s January meeting, many recognizing the danger our democracy is in and excited to turn the ship around. Former field organizer for Donna Shalala for Congress and the club’s interim President Bryan Hernandez spoke about the actions the club will be taking in 2019, including creating a vibrant community of like-minded people, engaging with the Miami-Dade County Commission and Governor DeSantis on issues club members care about, and training candidates to prepare for the 2019 and 2020 elections, such as the county commission and mayoral races. He urged those in the room to consider running for office themselves.
Former Democratic FL State Representative Robert Asencio addressed the crowd of Democrats. Asencio discussed his career in the FL legislature, his commitment to education reform and rejected the Republican efforts to put our public dollars in the hands of private charter schools, and urged Democrats to come up with a clear agenda to message to voters.
Formal executive board elections for President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and membership coordinator will be held at the next meeting on February 4, 2019 at 7pm at Total Wine in Town and Country, located at 11960 Mills Dr, Miami, FL, 33183 .
If you’re interested in running, please email the interim President with your intention to run at [email protected] so they you can put on the paper ballot. The club will also have specific committees, including fundraising, membership, candidate and campaign training, issues and non-profit coordination. Members will be able to sign up for the committees at the next meeting.
Free wine and pizza was served, members were able to chat with each other after the meeting and talk about why they want to get involved, and the positive energy in the room was contagious.
