Miami-Dade Democrats Congratulate Commissioner Eileen Higgins on Her First-Place Showing

MIAMI-DADE, FL: Commissioner Eileen Higgins won the highest vote share in today’s primary and will move on to the November runoff in a position of strength.

The Miami-Dade Democratic Party Chair, Steve Simeonidis, issued the following statement, congratulating Commissioner Higgins for her first-place showing.

“Commissioner Higgins has shown the strength of her support throughout County Commission District 5. I congratulate her on her first place showing tonight and I look forward to celebrating her reelection in the November runoff. We were proud to endorse her reelection, and we are proud that she has earned the support of the overwhelming plurality of her Miami-Dade constituents. It is clear that national Republicans like Marco Rubio wanted to take her out, but apparently his robocalls aren’t as effective as he thinks they are.”

The Miami-Dade Democratic Party ran an unprecedented voter outreach campaign, with direct voter contacts of nearly 200,000 voters alongside an aggressive digital campaign.

The Miami-Dade Democratic Party spent nearly half a million dollars in 2020 and contributed countless volunteer hours to increase the number of Democrats who are signed up for Vote-by-Mail and to get out the vote for the August Primary, especially targeting unlikely voters.

“The Get-Out-The-Vote campaign for August was an important test of our digital and field operations leading into the November Election,” said Steve Simeonidis, Chair of the Miami-Dade Democratic Party. “What we saw tonight was a vindication of years of planning, fundraising, hiring, and hard work on the part of the Democratic Executive Committee. It shows that Democrats in Miami-Dade are ready for change, and we intend to translate that into a big victory for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and Democrats up and down the ballot on November 3.”

Eileen Higgins was elected on June 19th, 2018 to serve as the County Commissioner for District 5, a district that includes parts of Miami Beach, Downtown, and Brickell as well as Coral Way neighborhoods like the Roads, Silver Bluff, and Shenandoah — along with Little Havana and West Flagler to the north. Commissioner Higgins has fought for resiliency in the face of a changing environment, common sense gun reforms to keep us safe, and programs that afford everyone an equal shot at the American Dream. From more reliable transportation to sea level rise, from affordable housing to better paying jobs, she is a champion for the policies that help everyone in our community succeed.
