In a startling setback for civil and voting rights in the U.S., conservative justices on the Supreme Court today struck down the core of the Voting Rights Act – a law that for decades has protected the vote for millions living in states with a history of voter suppression.

In response to the recent Miami Herald article: "Bill to support Miami Dade College dies on last day of session," the Miami-Dade Democratic Party issued the following statement:

"The fact is this bill should have been heard long before the last week of session and wasn't even on the agenda for the two days that an automatic reader was used," said Miami-Dade Democratic Party Chair Annette Taddeo-Goldstein. "This is a colossal failure of leadership by Erik Fresen, who should have pushed Speaker Weatherford to hear the bill during the last two days of session like so many other bills were. Instead of looking for false excuses, Fresen should look in the mirror as he should have focused on expanding medicaid for those who need health care and also increasing funding for higher education."
