District 5 Commissioner: Democrats endorse Rob Piper over Joe Sanchez and Vicki Lopez

Miami-Dade Democrats are proud to endorse Rob Piper for Miami-Dade County Commissioner, District 5, in his August election vs. Vicki Lopez and Joe Sanchez. At a moment when our county faces a housing affordability crisis, unchecked development, and a growing trust deficit at County Hall, Piper offers what District 5 needs most: a genuine commitment to transparency, accountability, and the everyday people who call this district home.

A Life of Service

Rob Piper's path to public service began long before he entered politics. Born in Baltimore and raised in Northern Virginia, Piper was taught early on that success comes from hard work and standing up for others. After graduating from Penn State, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Marine Corps in 1993, serving around the world, including three combat tours in Iraq, before landing in Miami in 2012 for his final assignment with U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South.

After retiring from the Marines in 2016, Piper didn't stop serving; he redirected that service toward his community. He became a precinct captain, led a political organization, earned his PhD in International Relations while working as a legislative aide in the Florida House, and led the Take Back Our City PAC to fight corruption at Miami City Hall. In 2024, he worked as a regional field director on multiple campaigns, deepening his commitment to outreach in underserved communities. That record of service, military, civic, and political, is the foundation of a campaign built on compassion, dignity, equity, and transparency.

Why District 5 Needs Rob Piper

Piper's opponents, Vicki Lopez and Joe Sanchez, both carry records that should give District 5 voters serious pause.

Vicki Lopez, the current District 5 incumbent, sponsored the Live Local Act as a state representative, a measure meant to address Florida's affordable housing shortage that critics argue preempted local growth controls while giving too much power to developers. In practice, the law has stripped Miami-Dade cities and neighborhoods of the ability to control building height, density, and zoning in their own communities, opening the door to towering developments in residential neighborhoods without adequate regard for traffic, water and sewage capacity, park space, or hurricane evacuation planning. The backlash has been so significant that even the City of Miami Commission, historically friendly to developer interests, voted to oppose the law. Coconut Grove Spotlight

Joe Sanchez, a former Miami City Commissioner, cast one of the deciding votes in 2009 to approve the Marlins Stadium bond deal, now estimated to cost Miami-Dade taxpayers roughly $2.6 billion to repay, a deal widely regarded as one of the worst public financing boondoggles in South Florida history, one taxpayers are still paying off nearly two decades later. Political Cortadito

Rob Piper has no such record of costly giveaways to developers or reckless deals at taxpayer expense. Instead, he offers a platform squarely focused on accountability and working people.

Piper's Platform for District 5

As County Commissioner, Piper has committed to:

  • Demand Transparency & Accountability in County Government, including monthly town halls, weekly constituent updates, a public digital budget tool, expanded county auditor resources, and new "sunshine mechanisms" to expose the influence of private interests on county policy.
  • End Special Interest Influence at County Hall, including a Sovereignty Protection Task Force to defend Miami-Dade from state and federal preemption, and expanded civic education so residents can better advocate for the issues they care about.
  • Lower Housing Costs & Expand Affordable Housing, through a county-owned public bank to finance affordable housing and small business development, an Anti-Displacement Tax Relief Fund for long-term homeowners at risk of being priced out, expanded Community Land Trusts, aggressive protection of naturally occurring affordable housing, and a Housing First approach to reducing homelessness.
  • Make the Wealthiest Pay Their Fair Share, by creating a Revenue Generation Task Force to explore options like adjusting property tax rates for high-wealth individuals and businesses, franchise fees on high-profit industries, and a luxury development tax.
  • Invest in Climate Resilience & Flood Protection, including a county Climate Resiliency Board to fund drainage infrastructure, a compost pilot program, tree canopy protections, home weatherization assistance, and tougher penalties for polluters of Biscayne Bay.

The Choice in District 5

This election is a choice between more of the same, developer-friendly policy and costly deals that leave taxpayers holding the bag, and a candidate who has spent his life in service to others and is committed to bringing real accountability to County Hall.

Miami-Dade Democrats urge District 5 voters to vote for Rob Piper for Miami-Dade County Commissioner on August 18th.
