Miami-Dade Democratic Party Chair Laura Kelley issued the following statement following Congresswoman Frederica Wilson's announcement that she will conclude her historic tenure in public office:
"For decades, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson has been a fearless champion for Miami-Dade County and a voice for communities that too often went unheard. She has spent a lifetime fighting for working families, children, seniors, students, and those who needed someone willing to stand up and speak on their behalf. For generations of families across our community, she has represented something even greater: hope, opportunity, and the belief that public service can still change lives.”
"Frederica Wilson has never simply represented our community — she has invested in it, nurtured it, and fought for it. Her work has always centered on creating pathways for opportunity, and ensuring that young people understand that their future can be bigger than the circumstances around them. She has consistently reminded our community that leadership is not about titles or recognition, but about lifting others up and ensuring no one is left behind.”
"Her leadership through the 5,000 Role Models of Excellence Project alone has changed countless lives. Through mentorship, guidance, and support, generations of young men and boys in our community were given hope, structure, and a belief that success was possible. The impact of that work will continue long after any elected office or title. That impact lives not only in programs or policies, but in the confidence she helped build, the doors she helped open, and the countless lives she inspired to dream bigger for themselves and their families.”
"On behalf of Democrats across Miami-Dade County, we thank Congresswoman Wilson for her years of extraordinary service, her passion, her courage, and her unwavering commitment to the people she has served. Her legacy is written across our neighborhoods, our schools, and the lives of thousands of people she helped along the way. Her imprint on this community is enduring, and future generations will continue to benefit from the foundation she helped build through decades of service, advocacy, and compassion.”
Born and raised in Miami, Congresswoman Wilson built a career centered around education, mentorship, and public service. Before serving in Congress, she worked as an educator and principal and later served on the Miami-Dade School Board, where she became known as a tireless advocate for students and educational opportunity. During her time in education, she founded the 5,000 Role Models of Excellence Project, a mentoring initiative designed to help guide and support young men toward academic and personal success. Her commitment to education was never simply about policy. It was about making sure every child, regardless of zip code or circumstance, felt seen, supported, and capable of achieving greatness.
Wilson's political career spanned nearly three decades. She served in the Florida House of Representatives beginning in 1998 before being elected to the Florida Senate in 2002. In 2010, she was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where she represented South Florida and became a nationally recognized advocate on issues including education, social justice, workforce development, health care, and economic opportunity. Throughout her career, she became known for her passionate advocacy, distinctive style, and unwavering focus on ensuring that underserved communities had a seat at the table. Whether in Tallahassee or Washington, she carried the voices of Miami-Dade with pride, conviction, and an unshakable commitment to justice and opportunity for all.
Throughout her public life, Wilson remained focused on a simple mission: opening doors for others and ensuring future generations had opportunities to succeed.
