The results of Tuesday’s election were not what we had hoped for in Florida. But here in Miami-Dade, there is a very different story to tell.
Miami-Dade saw an extraordinary shift from 2024. After voting for Donald Trump by more than 11 points just two years ago, our county supported Democratic candidates David Jolly and Angie Nixon. There was a shift of approximately 18 points toward Democrats, significantly greater than the national average.
And that shift translated into important gains.
We helped break the Republican supermajority in the Florida House, electing Lucia Baez-Geller and Gloria Romero Roses to represent Miami-Dade in Tallahassee. Kevin Chambliss held his seat, and Ashley Gantt was elected to the Florida Senate.
We elected two Democrats to Congress: Oliver Gilbert, who will succeed Frederica Wilson, and Jared Moskowitz, who won reelection in a newly redrawn district.
And we came remarkably close to two additional congressional victories. So close that the Eliott Rodriguez race is going to a recount and Nicole Locklin’s race has not been called yet.
We also helped a number of endorsed Democrats get elected or re-elected in municipal elections:
- Judy Hamelburg, Biscayne Park
- Howard Goldmann, Biscayne Park
- Denise White, El Portal
- Danny Rojas, El Portal
- Kassandra Timothe, North Miami
- Natasha L. Ervin, Opa-Locka
- Sherelean Bass, Opa-Locka
- Javier Fernandez, South Miami
- Steve Calle, South Miami
And a handful of endorsed candidates will be heading to runoff elections...
- Robert “B.J.” Duncan, Cutler Bay
- Mary Ann Mixon, Cutler Bay
- Linda Joseph, North Miami Beach
- Lasaly Changkachith, Palmetto Bay
- Jill Lerner, Pinecrest
These results don’t erase the disappointment of the statewide losses. But they do show that Miami-Dade is changing. The work of our candidates, volunteers, organizers, and supporters is making a difference.
To everyone who knocked on doors, made phone calls, sent texts, organized events, contributed, or simply helped a friend or neighbor vote: thank you.
Plenty more work ahead. And we have something meaningful to build upon.
