Dear Senators of the Committee on Community Affairs,
I am writing to urge you to vote NO on SB 1822, which would strip away the rights of local governments to regulate auxiliary containers such as single-use plastics.
Plastics are one of the greatest threats to our environment and public health. In Florida, single-use plastics routinely end up in our rivers, waterways, Biscayne Bay, and the ocean, where they break down into microplastics, pollute our waters, and harm both wildlife and human health. These plastics are ingested by fish, birds, and marine mammals, and have been found in the food we eat, the water we drink, and even our bloodstreams.
Biscayne Bay is in ecological crisis, and local governments have taken bold steps to reduce plastic pollution to protect our fragile ecosystems. These initiatives are grounded in the needs of each unique community and reflect the will of local residents and leaders. SB 1822 would override these thoughtful, place-based solutions, replacing them with a one-size-fits-all approach that benefits plastic producers and polluters—not the people of Florida.
Local municipalities must be able to make decisions that protect their environments, economies, and health. Preempting local action is not only shortsighted, but dangerous.
Please stand up for our waters, our wildlife, and the health of future generations. Vote NO on SB 1822.
Sincerely,
