Miami-Dade Democratic Party Condemns Donald Trump’s Attack on Haitian TPS Holders

The Miami-Dade Democratic Party strongly condemns Donald Trump’s renewed call to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals, a decision that would devastate families, weaken South Florida’s economy, and force thousands into a country plagued by violence, political instability, and humanitarian disaster.

Trump’s immigration policies have always been rooted in cruelty, and his latest attack on Haitian TPS holders is no different. This is the same man who once referred to Haiti and African nations as “shithole countries” and who, during his presidency, made every effort to dismantle protections for immigrants who contribute to our economy and our communities. Now, he is once again stoking fear and division, threatening to rip families apart and deport people to a country where gang violence, food insecurity, and lawlessness reign.

Haiti Remains in Crisis—Trump’s Plan is Inhumane

Haiti is not safe for deportations. The United Nations reports that more than 2,500 people have been killed in gang-related violence in the first half of this year alone. Armed gangs control large parts of Port-au-Prince, and kidnappings for ransom have become a daily threat to civilians. The Haitian people are enduring extreme hardship lack of healthcare, collapsed infrastructure, and a hunger crisis affecting nearly half the population.

Sending TPS holders back to this environment is not just reckless it is a death sentence for many. Trump’s call to end TPS ignores the reality on the ground and shows his complete lack of regard for human life.

Many Haitian TPS holders are also homeowners and business owners, meaning that mass deportations could trigger foreclosures and economic instability in our communities. Trump’s anti-immigrant policies would hurt Florida businesses, hurt our local economy, and hurt the very people who keep this state running.

Real Solutions, Not Xenophobic Policies

Instead of deporting people to crisis zones, we need real solutions that protect immigrant communities and strengthen our country. The Miami-Dade Democratic Party is calling for:

  • Extending and Redesignating TPS for Haiti, ensuring that individuals already living in the U.S. remain protected.
  • Granting TPS to Haitian nationals currently under humanitarian parole, so they are not left in limbo or forced back to danger.
  • Creating a clear pathway to permanent residency for long-term TPS holders who have lived, worked, and contributed to the U.S. for years.
  • Increasing U.S. support for Haiti, addressing the violence and instability so that, one day, safe return is a possibility.

Democrats Stand with Immigrants, Trump Wants to Destroy Families

The difference between the Democratic Party and Donald Trump's Republican Party could not be clearer. Under President Biden, TPS for Haitians was extended and more pathways for legal status, like humanitarian parole, were created. Under Donald Trump, TPS was nearly wiped out, immigrant families were separated, and racist rhetoric fueled policies that targeted Black and Brown communities.

The Miami-Dade Democratic Party will fight tooth and nail to protect our Haitian neighbors, TPS holders, and immigrant families from Trump’s cruel and destructive agenda. This is not just a political issue this is about humanity, dignity, and justice.

We urge Floridians to stand with Haitian TPS holders, call on Congress to extend and expand protections, and reject Trump’s policies.
