Democrats Raise the Alarm: Proposal to End Vote-By-Mail Would Turn Back the Clock on Democracy in Florida

Two bills just proposed to begin the Florida legislative session, SB 1752, and its even more odious house companion, HB 1669, if enacted, will rob Floridians of their access to Vote-By-Mail. Millions of Floridians voted by mail in recent elections – more than two and a quarter million of them in the 2022 midterms, and nearly five million of them in the last Presidential election. Republicans want to turn back the clock 25 years, suppressing the votes of working people, elderly voters, communities of color, college students and more.

The Miami-Dade Democratic Party is pleased and proud to announce that Senator Annette Taddeo, who served as county party chair from 2012 to 2014 and founded the party’s Blue Gala, will be chairing the party’s 10th anniversary of its annual fundraising event.

The 2023 Florida legislative session was among the most extremist on record. 

A number of the laws passed are already tied up in the courts with lawsuits challenging their constitutionality, including the 6-week abortion ban, the ban on gender-affirming care for minors, new restrictions on drag performances, and parts of the HB 7050 suppression bill. 

But many widely unpopular and repressive new laws went into effect on July 1.

The Miami-Dade Democratic Executive Committee congratulates Dr. Victor Vazquez on his election to the Miami Springs Council in the 2023 elections held on April 4.

“The Miami-Dade Democratic Party congratulates Dr. Victor Vazquez on his hard fought win. We were proud to endorse him and happy to have been a part of his victory. We look forward to seeing Dr. Vazquez lead his city forward,” said Miami-Dade Democratic Party Chair Robert Dempster.

History was made on Monday, February 27. Heading into women's history month, residents of Miami's district 2 elected Sabina Covo as their Commissioner, only the second time the city has elected a Latina woman to the commission (The city of Miami's population is 72% Hispanic). The Miami-Dade Democratic Party proudly salutes Sabina Covo’s victory in this special election.

Covo ran on a platform that prioritized combatting the effects of climate change, expanding access to high-quality public transit, making housing more affordable to residents, supporting arts and entertainment, and boosting the City’s economic development and tourism.
