Sabina Covo endorsed for City of Miami Commissioner, District 2, by Miami-Dade Democrats

The Miami-Dade Democratic Party voted on January 30 to endorse Sabina Covo for City of Miami Commissioner, District 2. A special election will be held in the City of Miami on February 27, 2023.

Ms. Covo, who is Colombian-American, worked as the Director of Hispanic Media Relations and Communications at the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services under former Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried. She is a former TV reporter and program host. Since late 2014, she has run her own public relations firm.

Covo’s 22-year residency in Miami’s District 2 and years covering issues at City Hall give her a unique insight into the problems plaguing the City of Miami. Her priorities include public safety, access to resources, affordable housing, support for arts and entertainment, and helping to boost the city’s economic development and tourism.

Bolstering Miami’s infrastructure and improving the city’s resilience to better combat the effects of tropical storms and rising sea levels are also at the top of her list. A press note from her campaign stated:

“Miami deserves a representative who will work to enhance our community,” she said in a statement.

“I have lived in Brickell, Edgewater, Coconut Grove and Downtown. I have reported on City Hall issues for over 15 years and I can see why it’s time for a trusted voice to represent the residents of District 2. … We have to be creative in our approach, and our solutions need to be all-encompassing.”

Robert Dempster, Chair of the Miami-Dade Democrats stated “Last night, the Miami-Dade Democratic Party voted, by an overwhelming margin, to endorse Sabina Covo in the upcoming City of Miami District 2 Special Election. City of Miami is struggling with real issues. District 2 faces some of the highest housing costs in the nation, woefully inadequate public transportation, and chronic flooding, just to name a few. Miami-Dade Democrats are confident that the election of Sabina Covo will represent a turning point for the City of Miami, in which public service and integrity will take center stage.”

Covo’s past media employers include NBCUniversal Telemundo, PRISA, SBS, Audi of Latin America, Caracol Broadcasting Inc., MundoFox, El Nuevo Herald, Spanish Broadcasting System and Gen Media Partners.

Interviews of candidates were conducted on January 22, 2023.
