“We Will Protect the Rule of Law No Matter What They Try”

Miami, FL: In response to extraordinary Republican voter suppression efforts, the Miami-Dade Democratic Party is gearing up to provide heightened voter protection in this year’s August and November elections.

Starting June 1, Democrats will train an unprecedented number of voter protection volunteers. “We’re standing up for all of Miami-Dade, making sure that every citizen counts,” explained Wayne Brody, Chair of the Miami-Dade Democratic Party Voter Protection Committee. “To do that, we are looking for lawyers, activists, problem solvers, and anyone who feels the need to make a difference.”

Although Democrats provide voter protection every cycle, this year’s efforts are critical in light of the tens of millions of dollars that Republicans are spending on “recruiting up to 50,000 volunteers in 15 key states to monitor polling places and challenge ballots and voters deemed ‘suspicious,’” according to the New York Times. 

“We all know what Republicans mean when they say ‘suspicious,’” said Brody, “and nowhere could this effort be more harmful to democracy, and to Democrats, than in Miami-Dade.” Miami-Dade has more voters than any other county in any other swing state in the entire country, and the majority are Black or Hispanic, the very voters whom Republicans intend to target.

Unchecked, the Republican program may intimidate a significant number of voters. Their dubious challenges may not disqualify anyone, but may slow down the voting process and deter voters in targeted communities from casting their ballots. The Democrats will not let that happen.

The Voter Protection Committee of the Miami-Dade Democratic Party works to ensure that all Miami-Dade voters eligible to vote can vote, and that every vote they cast is counted.
