So What Are Miami-Dade Democratic Legislators Doing in Tallahassee?

As the Florida Legislature prepares to close out Week 4 of its 2026 Regular Session, 1799 bills have been filed, around half of which will receive at least one committee hearing, and perhaps 300 of which will pass both Senate and House chambers. At the same time nearly 3000 special appropriations requests have been made for local projects ranging from drainage improvements to senior support services to workforce training to cultural venue subsidies. Most of these projects will not make it into the budget, and for those which do, some will fall to the Governor’s veto pen. All, however, represent the hopes of local governments and organizations to impact the lives of neighbors and nearby communities.

The six Democratic members of our Miami-Dade Legislative Delegation–Senator Shevrin Jones (SD 34), Representative Felicia Robinson (HD 104), Representative Wallace Aristide (HD 107), Representative Dotie Joseph (HD 108), Representative Ashley Gantt (HD 109), and Representative Kevin Chambliss (HD 117)--have spent the last month reviewing, speaking out on, offering amendments to, and voting on bills, all while negotiating with colleagues to advance their constituents’ priorities while–often behind the scenes–working to stop the most egregious Republican proposals in their tracks. Meanwhile, their district offices have continued to respond to constituent requests for information or action.

Here’s a look at some of our Democratic legislators’ key accomplishments since the 2026 Legislative Session opened on January 13:

Do you remember the case of the Miami Northwestern coach who was suspended for using his own funds to assist players in need? Senator Shevrin Jones’s bill SB 178 that would permit such contributions in the future, has passed two of three assigned committees, and its House companion bill is advancing as well.

As a former high school administrator acutely attuned to factors impacting student safety, Representative Felicia Robinson sharply questioned the sponsor of HB 133 (Minimum Age for Firearm Purchase or Transfer) on the House floor. The bill reverses post-Parkland gun safety reform legislation by allowing 18 year-olds to purchase long guns, a measure that Rep. Robinson found dangerous, given that mental maturity and impulse control mechanisms are often still in development at that age.

Representative Wallace Aristide has joined a large bipartisan group of legislators as a co-sponsor of HB 277, a proposal that combats domestic violence by increasing penalties for those with prior convictions, allowing for electronic monitoring in certain domestic or dating violence cases, and boosting financial assistance for domestic violence victims needing relocation support.

Representative Dotie Joseph has filed an ambitious portfolio of bills hitting hard at issues affecting the lives of everyday Miami-Dade County residents: protections for new Americans and prospective Americans; financial assistance to reduce medical debt; measures beyond developer incentives to increase the supply of affordable housing; continued support for free school breakfast and lunch; and protections against commercially-motivated invasions of personal privacy.

Recognizing that for veterans and military spouses hoping to start or grow a business, every dollar counts, in HB 1041 Representative Ashley Gantt has proposed waiving certain fees and providing certain tax exemptions for those with veteran or military spouse status. The bill, like its Senate companion by Senator Shevrin Jones, has made initial progress toward passage.

There is no fear like that of the parent of a child with severe disabilities worried that their son or daughter may face abuse at school. Representative Kevin Chambliss hopes to provide some assurance to such parents through HB 859 (Exceptional Students and Video Cameras in Public Schools), a proposal that has already passed two of its three assigned committees and whose Senate companion bill is likewise moving.
