Florida City Election Results 2026 - Runoff on February 17

Florida City voters cast ballots on Tuesday, January 27, in municipal elections for Mayor and City Commission, with results underscoring both the city’s strong Democratic base and the ongoing challenge of low voter participation. Democrats Sharon "Sheep" Smith-Butler (Mayoral race) and Trina Wilborn (Commissioner race) will both be on the ballot in the Feb 17 runoff.

Democrat Sharon Smith-Butler has served Florida City for 17 years as Vice Mayor and Commissioner, building a career rooted in public service and community trust. With experience spanning Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the Florida Department of Corrections, and faith-based work, she is running for Mayor to continue promoting honest leadership, public safety, and strong support for seniors and families.

Democratic Voters Dominate the Electorate

The partisan breakdown of ballots cast shows overwhelming Democratic participation:

  • Democratic: 732 ballots (71.07%)

  • Republican: 137 ballots (13.30%)

  • No Party Affiliation: 154 ballots (14.95%)

More than seven out of every ten voters who participated were Democrats, reaffirming Florida City’s status as a solidly Democratic community and reinforcing the outsized influence Democratic turnout has on local outcomes.

Mayoral Race Headed to Runoff

Five candidates competed for Mayor. With both precincts reporting, no candidate secured a majority, sending the race to a runoff election on Tuesday, February 17. The results were:

  • Charlotte Thompson: 402 votes (39.53%)

  • Sharon “Sheep” Smith-Butler: 271 votes (26.65%)

  • Walter P. Thompson Sr.: 184 votes (18.09%)

  • Israel J. Andrews: 111 votes (10.91%)

  • Alphonso D. Bryant: 49 votes (4.82%)

The runoff will feature Democrat Sharon “Sheep” Smith-Butler, with Democratic voters positioned to determine the city’s next mayor.

City Commission Results

City Commissioner Race (Five Candidates)
In this contest, voters were selecting two commissioners, meaning the top two vote-getters are elected outright. With all precincts reporting, the results were:

  • Ronda Ferguson Cobb: 411 votes (32.46%)

  • Richard Brown Jr.: 340 votes (26.86%)

  • Heniy L. Dixon: 239 votes (18.88%)

  • Clifford Waterman Sr.: 196 votes (15.48%)

  • Verlene Tenner: 80 votes (6.32%)

Based on these results, Ronda Ferguson Cobb and Richard Brown Jr. will take seats on the Florida City Commission.

City Commissioner Race (Three Candidates)
In the second City Commission race, no candidate achieved a majority, sending the contest to a runoff on February 17. The results were:

  • Trina Wilborn: 376 votes (38.76%)

  • James Brady: 333 votes (34.33%)

  • Takevess C. Hatcher: 261 votes (26.91%)

The runoff between Wilborn and Brady will determine who ultimately fills the remaining commission seat.

February 17 Runoffs Loom Large

With the mayoral race and one City Commission seat headed to a runoff election on Tuesday, February 17, the January results offer a clear lesson: in Florida City, Democratic voters are the decisive force, but turnout remains the limiting factor.

In elections where fewer than one in five registered voters participated, small increases in engagement could meaningfully change outcomes. As candidates and community leaders prepare for the runoff, the focus will likely shift to mobilizing Democratic voters who sat out the first round, knowing that Florida City’s future leadership will again be decided by a relatively small electorate.
