Miami-Dade Democrats Congratulate Dr. Mara Zapata on Advancing to a November Runoff

MIAMI-DADE, FL: Doral City Councilwoman Dr. Mara Zapata has advanced to the November runoff in the race for School Board District 5.

The Miami-Dade Democratic Party Chair, Steve Simeonidis, issued the following statement, congratulating Dr. Zapata for her strong showing.

“Dr. Zapata has shown the strength of her support throughout School Board District 5. I congratulate her on her strong showing tonight and I look forward to celebrating her election to the School Board in the November runoff. We were proud to endorse her in this race, and we are proud that she has earned such strong support throughout her district. We are ready to get to work to ensure she is elected in November, along with the rest of our slate of Democrats.”

Dr. Mara Zapata has dedicated her professional life to education and supporting both teachers and students. She currently serves as Associate Director of the FIUteach program in the STEM Transformation Institute. She has served as an Instructional Supervisor for Miami Dade County Public Schools in the division of Human Capital Management, supported and mentored many pre-service teachers; many of whom are current teachers in the field. Prior to this she served as an administrator in Curriculum & Instruction for Miami Dade County Public Schools, overseeing the implementation of several federally funded district wide programs and initiatives.

The Miami-Dade Democratic Party ran an unprecedented voter outreach campaign, with direct voter contacts of nearly 200,000 voters alongside an aggressive digital campaign.

The Miami-Dade Democratic Party spent nearly half a million dollars in 2020 and contributed countless volunteer hours to increase the number of Democrats who are signed up for Vote-by-Mail and to get out the vote for the August Primary.

“The Get-Out-The-Vote campaign for August was an important test of our digital and field operations leading into the November Election,” said Steve Simeonidis, Chair of the Miami-Dade Democratic Party. “What we saw tonight was a vindication of months and years of planning, fundraising, hiring, and hard work on the part of the Democratic Executive Committee. It shows that Democrats in Miami-Dade are ready for change, and we intend to translate that into a big victory for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and Democrats up and down the ballot on November 3.”

The Miami-Dade Democratic Executive Committee is the governing body of the Democratic Party in Miami-Dade County. Its mission is to build and sustain a strong Democratic Party in Miami-Dade County for the purpose of electing Democratic candidates to offices at all levels of government.
