Miami-Dade Democrats Congratulate Cindy Lerner on Her First-Place Showing

MIAMI-DADE, FL: Former Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner won the highest vote share in today’s primary in County Commission District 7 and will move on to the November runoff in a position of strength.

Miami-Dade Democratic Party Chair, Steve Simeonidis, issued the following statement, congratulating Mayor Lerner for her first-place showing.

“Mayor Lerner has shown the strength of her support throughout County Commission District 7. I congratulate her on her first place showing tonight and I look forward to celebrating her election to the Board of County Commissioners in the November runoff. We were proud to endorse her in this race, and we are proud that she has earned the support of the overwhelming plurality of the residents of District 7. We are ready to get to work to ensure she is elected in November, along with the rest of our slate of Democrats.”

The Miami-Dade Democratic Party spent nearly half a million dollars in 2020 and contributed countless volunteer hours to increase the number of Democrats signed up for Vote-by-Mail and to get out the vote for the August Primary. This led to an unprecedented voter outreach campaign, with direct voter contacts of nearly 200,000 voters alongside an aggressive digital campaign.

“The Get-Out-The-Vote campaign for August was an important test of our digital and field operations leading into the November Election,” said Simeonidis. “What we saw tonight was a vindication of years of planning, fundraising, hiring, and hard work on the part of the Democratic Executive Committee. It shows that Democrats in Miami-Dade are ready for change, and we intend to translate that into a big victory for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and Democrats up and down the ballot on November 3.”

Mayor Lerner served as mayor of Pinecrest, Florida for 8 years, elected in November 2008 and serving until 2016. A nationally recognized leader on climate change policies, Mayor Lerner attended White House discussions on climate issues and participated in the US - China Climate Leader’ Summit in Los Angeles in 2015 and as a presenter at the Summit in Beijing in 2016. She is a Past President of the Miami-Dade County League of Cities, and served on the Miami-Dade County Community Based Care Alliance.

The Miami-Dade Democratic Executive Committee is the governing body of the Democratic Party in Miami-Dade County. Its mission is to build and sustain a strong Democratic Party in Miami-Dade County for the purpose of electing Democratic candidates to offices at all levels of government.
